Top Ten Things I Do to Start Writing

 10. Make sure there’s plenty of caffiene.

9. Turn on music.

8. Wear comfy clothing. I could not go back to an office, if I wanted to. I could not dress like that again.

7. Pay the kids to play outside. Bribery is a beautiful thing.

 6. Go through my notes on strange stuff I’ve seen. The odder, the better. Cirque de Soliel has been good for three books. I am turned on by the absurd.

5. Remind myself that I am published and I don’t suck.

4. Make the room smell good.

3. Have a snack handy.

2. Make sure there’s plenty of toilet paper in the bathroom next to my writing area. If I have to get up to get it, I’m sunk. The moment I get off track, I’m gone for good.

1. Sit my butt in the chair and start writing, without beating myself up.
