Thirteen Reasons to Make Friends with an Author:

1. You, or a reasonable facsimile of you, may be immortalized in a book.

2. Authors know how how to use the word numinous in a sentence without looking like the nerds they are.

3. Authors have patience. It takes so long to get a book published that we don’t mind so much if you’re five minutes late. Ten minutes is pushing it, not becuase we aren’t fogiving, we are. You’re taking a risk that we’re going to pull out the ole notebook and start writing. You might as well turn around and go home, then. We are all, but unreachable.

4. Authors understand the importance of eating bad-for-you foods on a stressful day.

5. Authors go to ground and hide out a lot. They won’t mind if you need some space, because they understand the concept.

6. Authors notice things going on around them and are happy to point them out. Helpful when you’re being stalked.

7. Authors are great when setting you up on a blind date. They can describe the person perfectly. An author would never couch a description of a woman in the terms, “she has a great personality.” You’ll hear about the size of her butt, the weird way she smiles up at the sky and her terrific sense of humor. No second guessing needed!

8. Authors know things the rest of the world does not. Most helpful in a trivia game.

9. Authors listen very closely to what you say. The downside of this is that they are probably going to put it in a book.

10. Authors have fabulous book collections and are happy to let you borrow. Just not e-books. We’re very respectful of copyright laws.

11. An author will try new things, just for the experience. That often includes going first on the new things, allowing you time to re-think your stupidity!

12. An author will happily ghost write bridal party speeches for you.

13. Authors are loyal to the people that love them through countless rejections. We don’t get our heads turned over a little success.

Number 3 is a hoot. I have this good friend who is ALWAYS late. You can almost set your watch by her 15 minutes late arrival. :)

Love reading this. I’d gladly make friends with an author even without the perks, though :)

    I am a nerd. *snerk*

And reason #1 NOT to piss off an author–they will kill you in their next book.

Whoa. You know me too well.

The only objection to your list is that I had been under the impression I was unique in the world. Guess I’m not, and I really belong to a pretty special group.

Happy TT; thanks for visiting West of Mars. Hope you’ll come back again!

You have such a great sense of humor. I loved this list. The really funny thing is not only is it accurate but only understood by other authors. If you don’t write you just don’t get it.

Love your list, Nancy! Totally accurate I must say. You would not believe the times I’ve tried out things just to make sure it is accurate for my book. Like the time I was tied up with silk and had to wiggle my butt through my arms…well that’s another story… LOL

Getting to hang out with writers the rest of my life is definitely my favorite thing about being a writer!

    Happy TT!
